My Alma Mater In The News

Southwood, that is.

Here’s a nice article contrasting the success of the girl’s basketball team over the last fifteen years with the decline of the Southern Hills area in which the school is located. Reading it I felt like one of those old people who talk about  the good old days in downtown or wherever. I’ve worked at several of the places mentioned in the story. As for GM and AT&T, when I was in high school, it seemed like every other person in the school had a parent who worked for one of those two companies. No more; they’re shuttered and the payday loan stores far outnumber restaurants and retail shops.

And speaking of the Lady Cowboys, they’re 36-0 and will play Saturday for yet another state title.

Meanwhile, former Southwood softball coach Greg Frazier’s molestation trial continues. Innocent until proven guilty, but when he was arrested two years ago for having sex with a student, I think the most common reaction by anyone who attended the school over the last fifteen years was something like “it’s about time.”
