Ban The Red Light Cameras

Here’s a great idea:

Local and parish governments would be prohibited from using traffic cameras to catch scofflaws who speed, run red lights or make illegal turns under a bill proposed by a New Orleans lawmaker.

Rep. Jeff Arnold, D-Algiers, has filed House Bill 160, which also would require cities and parishes using traffic cameras — such as Lafayette, Orleans and East Baton Rouge — to unplug them by Jan. 1.

The cities and parishes using them will oppose this, of course, crying about safety. That’s b.s. These things are about money and nothing else. They make intersections more, not less, dangerous. And many cities that use them exacerbate the problem by shortening the yellow lights.  Even though shorter yellows means more wrecks, it also means more red-light-runners and therefore more money for the cities.
