About Confederate History Month

Ever since Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell declared this Confederate history month, I’ve wanted to post something about it. But then I find what I wanted to say has already been said better by Ta-Nehisi Coates. He treats the whole subject fairly and sympathetically and, in one quote, really sums up why so many southerners refuse to admit how wicked and wrong the Confederacy was:

Lost Causers worship their ancestors, in the manner of the abandoned child who brags that his dead-beat father is actually an astronaut, away on a mission of cosmic importance.

The rest of his posts are, in order, here, here, here and here.

years ago Lewis Grizzard had a column to the effect that the South lost because, near as he could tell, his great grandfather was the ONLY private in the Confederate Army, everyone elses relatives having apparently been Colonels at the least….kinda dovetails here

  2. Texas Redhead Loser Says:

While I also have an ancestor who fought for the South in the Civil War, I grew up in a different part of the south that doesn’t care much one way or the other about the Confederacy. Because of that, I always understood that while my dead relative may have had very complicated reasons for fighting, he was ultimately fighting on the wrong side. So I choose neither to judge nor venerate him – he just happened.
