I Wish This Could Be An Issue Here

California Cyclists Split On Two-Wheel Texting Ban.”

Man, how nice it must be to live somewhere with enough cyclists to require a ban on texting while riding. For that to happen, you don’t just have a lot of bikes, you have a lot of people using bikes for everyday activities. You’re normal, not the tight shorts wearing freak you are around here.

BTW, I’d never text while riding, but I think I would oppose the ban. Contra texting while driving a car, it’s hard to imagine how texting while riding a bike could injure anyone but the cyclist.

Is it really that hard to imagine someone losing control and ending up on a sidewalk, plowing into a child? Even if it’s unlikely, it’s still enough of a risk to warrant the ban.

Aside: The article mentions banning texting while walking. That one is ridiculous, but just yesterday I was with someone who was text-walking and I had to stop her from walking straight into oncoming traffic. If she had caused a wreck that badly injured someone, would that bolster their argument for such a ban?

Redhead, that was pretty much my response as well. I asked, “how hard is it to imagine a cyclist weaving in and out of traffic, and thus causing an accident?” Not too hard since we see it quite often even without texting. So, I agree with you.

if you mean to dream it up, no. if you mean thinking it has ever or would ever occur, yes.

as for wandering into the street, the driver would most likely be too distracted by her own phone to bother swerving and causing a wreck. she’d just plow right over the text walker.
