I Feel Obligated To Say Something About Floyd And Lance

Well, of course the former is a disgraced star reaching for one last bit of glory, and of course the latter has used some kind of PED’s.

Seriously, what possible value does Landis’s confession and finger pointing have? If you’ve always thought Lance was clean, the finger pointing by a guy who has just admitted – after years of denial – his own drug use is not going to change your mind. If you’ve always though Lance was dirty, this is more confirmation.

Me? Meh. The thing that really bothers me about doping in cycling is the same thing that bothers me about instant replay: It eliminates live sports. Just like after every singe significant play in the NFL, you have to wait to see the replay before celebrating (or cursing), after every cycling event, you have to wait for the test returns before enjoying the results. There’s no “moment.” Everything is an audition, awaiting final review before becoming the real thing. You can never see an event and say “I can’t believe that just happened” because, in a few more minutes, it might not have. I’ll take dirty riders and blown calls if that means I get the spontaneity and uniqueness of live sports back.

    one take –
…and in keeping with the quasi-legal theme of this blog, I’ll use the phrase “consider the preponderance of the evidence:”
    1. Lance has NEVER failed a drug test.
    2. As the #1 most famous cyclist (one of the most famous athletes) of all time, he HAS been tested more than a few times.
    3. As he returned to cycling during the times of the now most rigorous testing and certification of ALL time,
and as an OLD guy, he not only continues to test clean, he places on the podium at the TDF. (against some of the most talented riders of all time i.e. Schlecks, Contador, Cancellara, Evans, etc.)
    5. Floyd, who has a porn star mustache, wins ONE, and they catch him red handed as a doper.
    6. Floyd not only spends tons of money and time on his appeal, but sees it to the end proclaiming his innocence.
    7. Floyd is found guilty by AMERICANS (not just the frogs)
    8. Floyd makes tons of money publishing a book, STILL proclaiming his own innocence.
    9. Floyd returns to cycling and sucks.
    10. Floyd keeps trying and still sucks.
    11. Floyd must make excuses.
    12. Floyd comes clean, and decides to rationalize, nay minimize, his own actions by accusing Lance.
    13. There are lots of others, including George, who would have to be guilty in order for Floyd’s story to be accurate.
    14. I like George.
    15. Floyd’s best friend is/was Dave Zabriskie.
    16. I hate Dave Zabriskie! He’s the guy that led the charge in the last TDF to intentionally cock block George from his first, and well earned, stage victory despite the apparent lack of gain for Garmin (his team). Everyone recognized this as a senseless dirty move.
    17. Floyd is a former Mennonite. Hence he probably had a complex before he ever even started cycling.
    18. the truth always comes out.
    19. Floyd could no longer hide the truth of his own transgressions, but has proven he is incapable of being selfless(like a child).
    20. If Lance is dirty, he has no conscience at all and would have to be something akin to the antichrist considering all his “facade”. To me, that’s a stretch.
